Lawmakers travel state to hear infrastructure needs

Capital hearings pic1State lawmakers traveled across the state this spring to hear from local officials, transportation experts and other interested parties about what projects need to be addressed in a comprehensive capital bill to improve Illinois’ infrastructure and potential revenue sources to fund them.

The Senate Joint Subcommittees on Capital, co-chaired by State Senator Andy Manar and State Senator Martin A. Sandoval, held a total of eight hearings spanning the course of three months. Along with two hearings at the Capitol in Springfield, senators traveled to Edwardsville, Decatur, Peoria, Elgin, Chicago and Grayslake to hear about needs in local communities.

04292019CM0263CHICAGO – Support for public transit upgrades and more affordable housing in Illinois were two common themes lawmakers heard in Chicago as they continue to discuss a statewide construction plan.

Members of the Joint Subcommittees on Capital, led by State Sen. Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) and State Sen. Martin A. Sandoval (D-Chicago), heard ideas from transportation experts, local government officials, community infrastructure groups and other interested parties about what infrastructure projects desperately need investment as well as potential revenue sources to pay for them.

Bush holds Senate hearing on infrastructure and transportation needs in Lake County

09112015AB0005GRAYSLAKE – State lawmakers heard from local elected officials, educators and stakeholders on transportation and infrastructure needs in Lake County during a Senate capital hearing.

The hearing, hosted by State Senator Melinda Bush (D-Grayslake), marked the seventh stop on the lawmakers’ statewide tour to hear about local infrastructure concerns and discuss a potential statewide construction plan.

Local construction priorities revealed in Peoria, Elgin hearings

Elgin HearingHighway expansion, bridge improvements, college building projects and wastewater and sewage upgrades are among the priorities that continue to be identified by local officials throughout Illinois as lawmakers contemplate a new statewide construction plan and ways to pay for it.

Illinois has not approved a major infrastructure plan since 2009. During a series of hearings around Illinois this spring, state senators are hearing from mayors, township officials, civil engineers, college presidents, labor representatives and others about the deteriorating and sometimes unsafe condition of roads, bridges and public buildings throughout the state.
