Noland continues as Chair of Criminal Law Committee Named Vice-Chair of Redistricting Committee

SPRINGFIELD, IL State Senator Michael Noland (D-Elgin) will continue to serve as Chair of the Senate Criminal Law Committee during the 97th General Assembly. A lawyer by profession, Noland has used his position to help bring an end to Governor Quinn’s controversial early prison release program and to pass legislation protecting crime victims.

"I always strive to maintain a balanced perspective as Chair of the Criminal Law Committee," Noland said. "It’s extremely important to both protect the rights of victims and the integrity of the judicial process."

Noland has also been appointed Vice Chair of the Commerce and Redistricting Committees. The Redistricting Committee is especially important this year, as new legislative maps will be drawn based on 2010 census data.

"Promoting job growth has always been one of my top priorities," said Noland, who sponsored the Small Business Job Creation Tax Credit last year. "My legislation has helped put tens of thousands of Illinois residents to work. As Vice Chair of the Commerce Committee, I will be able to continue fighting for new private sector jobs."

"I am also honored to play such an important role in the redistricting process," Noland said. "I pledge to do my best to make sure we use commonsense guidelines as we draw Illinois’ new legislative districts."

In addition to his roles as chair and vice-chair, Noland will serve on the Judiciary and Public Health Committees. The Judiciary Committee addresses issues of civil law.

"I think it only makes sense that the Chair of the Criminal Law Committee also sit on the Judiciary Committee," Noland said. "Their work is very closely interrelated. I am committed to using my position on these committees to do everything I can to improve the lives of the people who live in my district."
