Bush advances measure protecting seniors from home repair scams

bush 051019SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Melinda Bush (D-Grayslake) advanced a measure yesterday to provide seniors additional protections from door-to-door home repair scams.

“We’ve seen cases where people have posed as city inspectors or police officers and used scare tactics to pressure seniors into making costly and unnecessary home repairs,” Bush said. “This bill will give seniors more time to cancel home repair contracts, making them less likely to fall victim to financial scams.”

Under the measure, anyone 65 years or older who purchases home repair or remodeling services from an uninvited solicitor may cancel the contract within 15 business days. Currently, the cancellation period is three days.

“Too often, seniors are targeted for financial scams, especially at times when they’re most vulnerable, like after a natural disaster,” Bush said. “This measure gives seniors more time to review contracts and consider whether costly home repair or remodeling services are necessary.”
