Illinois capital construction hearings have begun

Sandoval and Manar Capital hearing SpringfieldIn an effort to boost public input and better understand the conditions of Illinois’ aging infrastructure, two Illinois Senate subcommittees have called for testimony from interested groups about what construction projects are most needed in the state.

Subcommittee Co-Chairs Sen. Martin Sandoval (D-Chicago) and Sen. Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) have committed to holding seven committee hearings throughout the state.

“Intolerable” I-80 bridge sparks demand for new transportation funding

I 80 BridgeLocal officials are demanding action from the Illinois Department of Transportation after an inspection report called the condition of a bridge on Interstate 80 near Joliet “critical,” “intolerable” and a “high priority for replacement.”

IDOT has planned a short-term project to take place this spring to repair a portion of the I-80 bridge that supports the westbound roadway that is estimated to cost around $5 million. Officials say the bridge is safe for travel in the meantime.


A timetable for complete replacement of the bridge has not been set, but the project is expected to cost the state a total of $1 billion. There is currently no plan in place to fund these repairs.

Lakeshore Drive bridge closure demonstrates urgent infrastructure needs

Lake Shore DriveA bridge on northbound Lake Shore Drive in Chicago was closed February 11 causing serious delays through the evening rush hour.

Local transportation officials made the decision to close the bridge over safety concerns after serious cracks appeared in two steel beams that support the roadway. The bridge closed at 11:15 a.m. on Monday and did not reopen until Tuesday afternoon.
