Castro fights for improved charter school oversight

SPRINGFIELD — To promote accountability, State Senator Cristina Castro is sponsoring a bill that would transfer oversight of state-run charter schools to local school boards.

“Oversight from a distance is not the best way to promote a high-quality, comprehensive education for charter school students,” said Castro (D-Elgin). “This bill would ensure accountability and safeguard the efforts made by taxpayers and students to foster great learning environments in each respective school.”

Senate Bill 4040 would automatically transfer any state-authorized charter school located outside of the geographical area of a school district back to the local school board or boards.

Guzmán fights federal overreach in higher education

SPRINGFIELD – In the face of growing threats to higher education from the Trump administration, State Senator Graciela Guzmán’s bill to establish academic freedom at Illinois universities passed committee.

“Places of higher education learning should be sanctuaries of free learning, debate and challenging ideas,” said Guzmán (D-Chicago). “Students and faculty should not be pressured to suppress their political or academic opinions.”

Hastings fights for stronger oversight of Buy-Now-Pay-Later loans to protect Illinois consumers

SPRINGFIELD — State Senator Michael E. Hastings is speaking out on the need for stronger oversight of Buy-Now-Pay-Later programs, a fast-growing form of short-term credit that allows consumers to pay for purchases in installments.

“These programs may seem convenient at first, but they can carry hidden costs, unexpected fees and financial risks that often go unnoticed until it is too late,” said Hastings (D-Frankfort). “Young people, low-income families and those on fixed incomes are especially vulnerable. Illinois consumers deserve clear information, protections and accountability from lenders.”

Stadelman measure to strengthen transparency of digital product sales

SPRINGFIELD – In an effort to strengthen consumer protections in the online market space, State Senator Steve Stadelman sponsors legislation to hold sellers accountable for clarifying conditions of purchasing digital goods.

“Digital goods are a growing part of our economy, and our consumer protection laws must keep pace,” said Stadelman (D-Rockford). “This bill closes a loophole that allowed sellers to market digitals products without clearly explaining the restrictions attached. Transparency is not optional – it’s essential.”
