State Senator Cristina Castro on the Senate floorSPRINGFIELD — To close gaps in health care that new mothers and their children face before their standard six-week postpartum checkup, State Senator Cristina Castro led a measure through the Senate that would expand at-home care for newborns and their families.

“Providing a community and resources for new mothers and their children delivers stability in a critical period of their lives,” said Castro (D-Elgin). “The challenges of becoming a new parent should not be faced alone.”

Ellman backs measure to modernize prescription drug delivery rules

ellman 052026SPRINGFIELD — To provide greater flexibility for healthcare providers and businesses receiving prescription drug deliveries while maintaining safeguards for controlled substances State Senator Laura Ellman is advancing House Bill 4953, reducing burdens for businesses operating across multiple sites while preserving accountability and safety standards.

“Health care providers and businesses often operate across multiple locations, and outdated delivery rules can create unnecessary administrative hurdles,” said Ellman (D-Naperville). “This measure provides flexibility for non-controlled prescription drugs while keeping important protections in place for controlled substances.”

Villivalam advances measure expanding transparency on utility rates

SPRINGFIELD ─ State Senator Ram Villivalam is championing a measure that would increase transparency when utility companies ask the Illinois Commerce Commission to raise their rates.

“Cost of living is on the rise – and so are our utility bills,” said Villivalam (D-Chicago). “Meanwhile, utility rate hikes are occurring without transparency or an opportunity for public input.”

Edly-Allen measure aims to strengthen play-based learning advances

MEA 052026SPRINGFIELD – Children in play-based learning environments show stronger language skills, cognitive and social development than their peers in more challenging academic settings, according to the National Association for the Education of Young Children, a finding that is driving new efforts in Illinois to strengthen early education. State Senator Mary Edly-Allen advanced legislation to reinforce those practices in classrooms across the state.

“By clearly defining play-based learning, we are giving educators the tools they need to create classrooms where children can explore, grow and build the foundational skills that set them up for long-term success,” said Edly-Allen (D- Grayslake). “As an educator and parent, I have seen firsthand how powerful play can be in helping children develop confidence, curiosity and a love of learning,”
