State Senator Julie Morrison addresses the Senate Criminal Law Committee

DEERFIELD — State Senator Julie Morrison is leading legislation that would ensure the Illinois State Police utilize the national DNA profile database CODIS to notify investigating agencies if a consistent DNA profile has been identified.

“The CODIS database is a valuable tool for law enforcement agencies to ensure our safety and seek justice for victims of crimes,” said Morrison (D-Lake Forest). “It is imperative that we continue to provide the administrative tools needed to ensure the Illinois State Police is able to utilize and contact investigating law enforcement agencies if a match is identified.”

House Bill 5580 would require the Illinois State Police to notify the investigating agency, in writing, if a consistent DNA profile has been identified by comparing evidence with a known standard from a suspect or with profiles in the CODIS database.

The CODIS database is a FBI-operated national database of DNA profiles from convicted offenders, arrestees and crime scene evidence – enabling law enforcement agencies to link crimes and identify suspects through DNA profiles on the local, state and national level.

“By ensuring law enforcement agencies utilize the CODIS database, we are supporting crime victims and securing safety in our neighborhoods,” said Morrison.

House Bill 5580 passed the Senate Criminal Law Committee Tuesday.
