SPRINGFIELD ─ State Senator Ram Villivalam is spearheading a measure through the Senate aimed at ensuring accessible, affordable housing in Illinois.
“Since 2024, cost of living has continued to rise, and now the Trump administration is continuing to make it harder for working families to access quality, affordable housing in their own neighborhoods,” said Villivalam (D-Chicago). “With residents potentially facing additional federal requirements to secure adequate housing, we must act now to ensure all Illinoisans have housing options within reach.”
Recently, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development proposed a rule that would encourage housing authorities to impose work requirements and time limits on residents receiving housing assistance.
To ensure accessible, affordable housing for Illinoisans, Villivalam is spearheading Senate Bill 608, which would prohibit housing authorities and private owners of subsidized housing from mandating work requirements or placing time limits on residents who do not meet work requirements.
“We must stand up for our neighbors to ensure their ability to live and thrive in our neighborhoods, not make them work unsustainable hours just to be able to put a roof over their head,” said Villivalam. “By making sure families don’t face additional hurdles to safe, stable homes, we can take a positive step forward to secure the future of affordable, accessible housing for our communities.”
Senate Bill 608 passed the Senate Executive Committee Tuesday.
